Ibeabuchi is ruled competent to stand trial; date set for Sept. 17

District Judge Joseph Bonaventure Wednesday said former heavyweight champion Ikemefula "Ike" Ibeabuchi is competent enough to stand trial.
Ibeabuchi is charged with sexually assaulting an outcall dancer at a Strip hotel room in July 1999. Bonaventure last week traveled to Sparks to hear from a group of doctors about the boxer's mental state.
Ibeabuchi's attorney, Richard Wright, argued that his client is in remission from bi-polar disorder. He maintained that while Ibeabuchi understands the nature of the alleged crime, he is unable to assist counsel in his defense.
The trial date was set for Sept. 17.
