Letter: Beware of good grades, children
Monday, July 23, 2001 | 9:05 a.m.
So because some of the children in one of the Clark County Public Schools actually received high grades in their exams, there of course must be some mistake, and an investigation of cheating is now under way.
Has it even occurred to the "officials" that these kids may have engaged in the old-fashioned practice of (gasp) studying?
Isn't the purpose of schools to encourage the students to improve their grades? And isn't it remotely possible that they are blessed with excellent teachers?
If expectations in the Clark County School District are this low -- no wonder the dropout rate is such a disgrace.
The message to the children seems to be "don't study, kids, whatever you do!" You'll be considered a "nerd," and if your grades are too high, you'll be in big trouble. Better to become a stupid adult than to risk such a fate!
