Robert Miller, dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine, has announced the addition of 13 new faculty members as plans move forward to create an academic medical campus in downtown Las Vegas.
"Our new medical faculty represent a strong diversity of experiences, medical training and specialization," Miller said. "We have recruited highly skilled and talented physicians from prestigious programs throughout the United States and abroad who will assist us in training the next generation of Nevada's physicians."
The medical school currently has 92 faculty members teaching students and resident physicians at University Medical Center, Sunrise Hospital and affiliated clinics in Las Vegas. The proposed Nevada Medical Center would contain the main classrooms, out-patient offices, an affiliated hospital and the UNLV Dental School, a Cancer Institute and the School of Pharmacy.
Miller said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has been "extremely supportive" of the plans for the new facility, which could be located on a 61-acre plot that is slated for development downtown. Miller said he has also heard from developers interested in including the medical school in plans for a private, 800-bed medical center.
