Arizona attorney is honored

Richard Romley, an Arizona attorney who lost both his legs in the Vietnam War, will be awarded Disabled American Veterans Outstanding Disabled Veteran of the Year for 2001 at the 80th National Convention of the DAV and Auxiliary at the end of July.

Romley severely wounded his arms, right hand, stomach and both legs when he crossed the path of an enemy land mine in Danang, Vietnam, in 1969. He retired from the Marine Corps in March 1970, and began his schooling, which led him to law and public service. He went on to be a key sponsor of the Violence Prevention Initiative and was recognized for his efforts by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

This nonprofit organization selects an Outstanding Disabled Veteran of the year award to go to someone annually, for their work in the community.

Local student in advertisement

A local high school senior has been chosen as one of the 25 winners of the Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year.

The Western High School student, Jacob Hicks, was selected from more than 9,000 applicants to receive $7,500 for college and starred in Milk Mustache ad that appeared in USA Today on June 22 and will be in future issues of Sports Illustrated and ESPN Magazine.

Hicks academic achievements, school involvement and athletic participation helped him rise above the rest in the pool of applicants. At least judges Cal Ripken Jr., Pete Sampras, Mia Hamm, Tony Hawk and Kurt Warner thought so when they chose him to receive the scholarship.
