Fuel surcharge to be considered

The Nevada Taxicab Authority will consider at its July 24 meeting implementing a fuel surcharge for passengers on each taxi ride in Clark County.
The board is considering a charge of between 10 cents and 20 cents per trip to compensate for higher fuel costs, which have fluctuated dramatically since February.
The proposed taxi fuel charge, which could take effect Aug. 1 if approved, is controversial because taxi rates were raised on May 1 by 10 cents a mile to $1.70 a mile. Las Vegas' 14 taxi companies now collect 10 cents per one-seventeenth mile, up from 20 cents per one-eighth mile. The rate increase was authorized, in part, to offset rising fuel prices.
