Letter: Save energy by dimming Las Vegas glitter

Thursday, July 12, 2001 | 8:38 a.m.

Our newspaper, the Standard-Examiner of Ogden, Utah, recently published a short editorial which had previously appeared in your newspaper. The editorial pointed out how crucial sufficient power is to your desert city and how serious blackouts could be should they occur there.

Way up here in Nowheresville we have been making our humble attempts to conserve, and we have discussed the problems in Nevada and California. We have speculated among ourselves as to how much power could be saved if the casinos in your city were to turn down the glitter.

As long as fake volcanoes and phony ship sinkings and a gazillion bulbs are burning to help people find their way to the tables and machines, we find it difficult to feel sympathy for Las Vegas in its plight. It would appear that Vegas has a much more visible solution to conserving energy than any other Western city.
