Boxer’s competency considered by judge

District Judge Joseph Bonaventure will be traveling to Sparks next week to hear from a group of doctors who will discuss the competency of sexual assault suspect Ikemefula "Ike" Ibeabuchi.
Bonaventure learned Wednesday that the director of a state mental facility believes the former heavyweight fighter is now competent.
However, before Ibeabuchi can be brought back to stand trial, Bonaventure must listen to the opinions of the doctors so he can decide for himself if the ex-boxer understands the charges against him and can assist in his own defense.
Ibeabuchi is charged with sexually assaulting an outcall dancer at a Strip hotel room in July 1999.
Bonaventure and the attorneys on the case will travel to Sparks July 19 and the judge will issue his decision July 25. If Ibeabuchi is found to be competent, Bonaventure will also set a trial date at that time.
