Columnist Peter Benton: Entries being taken for women’s championship

Wednesday, July 11, 2001 | 9:48 a.m.

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

Entries into this year's Nevada State Women's Amateur Championship and State Senior Championship, scheduled Sept. 11-13 at the Wolf Run Golf Club in Reno, are now being accepted.

The 54-hole tournament, which has a $210 entry fee, will be limited to the first 100 entries.

Competitors must be members of the Northern or Southern Nevada Women's Golf Associations with a handicap not exceeding 35.2 at date of entry.

Prizes will be awarded for gross scores in the Championship flight and both gross and net in the Directors and Senior flights.

Failing to rake a bunker with the idea that someone else will get it or that workmen will rake it the following morning is totally ignorant. Allowing an indentation on a green caused by the impact of your ball to go unrepaired is unforgivable, and neglecting to fill your divot on a fairway with sand is another example of unacceptable behavior for a "true golfer."

Throw in dragging your spiked feet on greens or twisting your shoes when you walk, digging your ball out of the cup with your putter head, driving too close to the greens, littering, and even throwing the flagstick on the greens instead of placing it down as further examples of golfing ignorance.

It is not practical to have a workman follow every player to rectify your wrongs, so it is expected that each golfer will take a moment to repair any damage done and thus show consideration to the course and to your fellow golfer.

Hitting a golf ball long and straight and holing putts does not necessarily a golfer make -- to be a complete golfer one must have playing skills plus course etiquette.
