Rebel football recruit captures MVP honor

Monday, July 9, 2001 | 9:43 a.m.

UNLV football recruit Earvin Johnson was named the most valuable player for the California team in Saturday night's Cal-Texas Shrine All-Star football game at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

The 6-4, 205-pound Johnson, who is expected to see immediate playing time at wide receiver for the Rebels this fall, caught six passes for 74 yards en route to team MVP honors.

However, California, which had won the six previous matchups, dropped a 10-7 decision to Texas.

Linebacker Derrick Johnson (6-4, 210), a Parade All-American from Waco who signed with the University of Texas, stepped in front of Las Vegas Sun Super 11 top vote-getter Shaun Cody (USC) to intercept a Kyle Matter (Stanford) pass and returned it 52 yards for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown for the Texans.

California's only touchdown came on a 10-yard run by UCLA-bound Jelani Harrison, an honorable mention Super 11 pick. Texas held California to minus-13 yards rushing in the contest.
