Gray water recycling to begin

A $37.2 million treatment center is expected to begin recycling gray water in northwestern Las Vegas Valley today.
The Northwest Water Resource Center will recycle wastewater, officials said, saving both power and water. Every drop of Lake Mead's water has to be pumped more than a mile uphill for valley residents to use.
Up to 10 million gallons a day of wastewater can be treated underground or under cover at the 13-acre plant, located on Durango Drive between Cheyenne Avenue and Gowan Road, officials said. By building the treatment plant to blend in with the environment, noise and odors are expected to be eliminated.
The treated water, captured in the area, will irrigate golf courses and parks, city of Las Vegas and Las Vegas Valley Water District officials said. The city paid $29 million of the plant's cost and the water district contributed the rest.
