County Commission briefs for July 6, 2001

Public hearing on ordinance set

The Clark County Commission will hold a July 18 public hearing on an ordinance to tighten regulations over escort bureaus and outcall entertainment referral services.

The businesses would have to be at least 1,500 feet from existing or planned homes, churches, libraries, schools and day-care facilities under the ordinance proposed by Commissioner Erin Kenny.

People in the outcall industry say they plan to speak against the proposal during the public hearing. There are more than 150 outcall service companies registered in the county.

Plans for cabaret denied

The County Commission quashed a request to build a 15,500-square-foot adult cabaret building and parking garage on the site of an existing strip club, Diva's Las Vegas.

Officials with the nearby Orleans hotel-casino, Southwest Gas Corp. and other businesses said the cabaret would not be harmonious with their businesses. They argued that the existing building already disrupts their businesses with traffic problems and with beer bottles and ad fliers cluttering their grounds.

Commissioner Erin Kenny agreed with the surrounding businesses and said when the Orleans was first being built it was supported by neighbors because it would provide a family place for them to go and this cabaret would not be compatible with those types of companies in that area.

Requests put on hold

Twelve applications requesting permission to construct billboards throughout the Las Vegas Valley were put on hold Thursday by the County Commission.

For the last several months, county commissioners have held the applications for new billboards in anticipation of a new county ordinance that will govern where the signs can go.

The commissioners will consider a proposed zoning rule for the signs July 18. Many of those applications are likely to come before the commission for reconsideration the same day.
