Terry won’t run for DA

Thursday, July 5, 2001 | 10:31 a.m.

Longtime defense attorney William Terry has decided not to run for Clark County District Attorney in 2003.

Terry, whom many considered the front-runner in the race, said his decision is a financial one.

"I had to re-evaluate the situation after the Legislature rejected the pay increase for the second time," Terry said.

Legislators have voted against pay increases for the district attorney and the sheriff in the past two sessions despite approving them for judges, Terry said.

The district attorney's position garners $100,000 a year -- significantly less than a private defense attorney can earn.

Terry said he had been counting on the legislators to approve the 40 percent increase to off-set the loss of income he would incur during months of campaigning.

By announcing his decision now, Terry said those who have committed to him financially can select another candidate.

Also, those attorneys who had chosen not to run against him can now toss their hats into the ring, Terry said.

Right now, the only other name being mentioned in connection with the race is Deputy District Attorney Mike Davidson, who currently supervises the civil and family support divisions.
