Bus driver in critical condition after crash

Thursday, July 5, 2001 | 10:30 a.m.

The driver of the Greyhound bus that crashed early Tuesday near Glendale was listed in critical condition this morning.

Many of the 37 passengers taken to area hospitals after the crash have been released. However, several are still recovering, including 26-year-old woman in guarded condition, who had an emergency Caesarean section delivering a baby boy, hospital officials said.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers suspect the driver, Jerry Davis, 61, of Las Vegas, may have fallen asleep, sending the bus through a guardrail and down an 30-foot embankment about 3:20 a.m. Tuesday.

"We have witnesses who said that he fell asleep," said Trooper Alan Davidson, a Highway Patrol spokesman.

Investigators have been unable to speak with Davis because of his condition, Davidson said.

The bus left New York City on Sunday and was heading to Los Angeles with many stops in between, including one scheduled in Las Vegas.

The bus was not supposed to stop in Glendale, and police are trying to determine why it was on an exit ramp at the time of the crash.
