The arraignment date for Orlando Sandoval, a former associate vice president of Community College of Southern Nevada, has been set for Aug. 2, according to prosecutors.
Sandoval was indicted Thursday by a grand jury on charges of violating the state's anti-nepotism law. The crime is considered a gross misdemeanor that carries a maximum of one year in prison and a $2,000 fine.
Sandoval will enter his plea at the arraignment, and a trial date will be set.
The case against Sandoval stemmed from a 10-month attorney general's investigation of CCSN leaders.
The indictment alleges Sandoval hired his father-in-law, Duane Stevens, as a heating and air conditioning specialist in 1991. Sandoval also allegedly helped his father-in-law get substantial raises, according to the indictment.
The attorney general's office said Stevens received a five-year contract in which Sandoval recommended that his father-in-law's pay be increased from $42,000 to $60,000 a year.
Sandoval is on the record stating that he did not, "directly supervise his father-in-law, nor had he ever signed any employment documents relating to him."
