July Fourth commemorates the 1776 adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress -- not the victory over Great Britain in the Revolutionary War, as some believe. That bitter conflict did not end until the British surrendered at Yorktown, Pa., on Oct. 19, 1781. Here is what is open and closed on Wednesday:
SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.
UTILITIES: Closed: Sprint, Southwest Gas, Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Cox Communications cable TV.
GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.
SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County School District's year-round schools and summer classes for Community College of Southern Nevada and UNLV.
MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: U.S. Postal Service and United Parcel Service.
NEWSPAPER: Sun combined with morning editions if Review-Journal. Sun offices closed.
TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City trolleys: Holiday schedule (one less trolley in operation). Citizens Area Transit: Holiday schedule (fewer buses in operation on fixed routes).
LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District, North Las Vegas District, Boulder City Municipal.
GARBAGE: Republic Services of Southern Nevada pickups as usual.
MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 8 a.m. Tuesday to midnight Thursday.
FINANCES: Closed: Banks, brokerage firms.
ZOO: Open: Southern Nevada Zoological and Botanical Park.
PARKING: City parking metered spaces are free.
