Letter: Won’t stand for cuts in benefits
Monday, July 2, 2001 | 9:20 a.m.
I, as a low- to moderate-income senior, absolutely and positively will not accept any, zilch, nada cuts in benefits as a result of the stacked Social Security "Commission" chosen by an illegitimate, court-appointed, mean-spirited president. Especially when he is doling out huge tax cuts to millionaires, and that is that! I can't express my opposition any clearer than that!
Bush promised that no current benefits would be cut, which I knew all along was a big lie. And the commission is composed of several who have supported huge benefit cuts in the past. Today's seniors are not responsible for any problems that may (I say may) occur 30 years from now (we paid our designated payroll taxes, including many raises over our working lives, and I see no reason why future workers can't do the same) and to make them scapegoats is inviting political defeat or even worse. So President Bush, take heed!
