3 weekend slayings under investigation
Monday, July 2, 2001 | 10:42 a.m.
Metro Police arrested two people in connection with two slayings over the weekend and continue to investigate a third homicide.
Police arrested 38-year-old Terry Ormond this morning and booked him into the Clark County jail on a murder charge. He is accused of killing a 49-year-old woman Sunday.
The woman was found dead in her room at the Crest Budget Motel, 207 N. 6th St. about 4:45 a.m. Sunday, police said.
Witnesses at the scene told detectives that they heard a disturbance coming from the victim's room, then saw a man leave.
Ormond was arrested without incident at a friend's home in North Las Vegas, police said.
Police also made an arrest in the Friday slaying of a homeless man. Richard Glen Burt was booked into the jail on one count of murder, police said.
Police were called to an area behind a convenience store on Bonanza Road and Lamb Boulevard Friday about 5:30 p.m. and found a severely beaten homeless man.
Paramedics tried to treat the victim at the scene, but he died of his injuries. The homeless man was known to frequent the area, and a motive for the crime is unknown, police said.
Police were still searching to identify a suspect in the the third slaying over the weekend.
They were called out Saturday morning to the 3100 block of East Tarpon Drive, near Tropicana Avenue and Pecos Road, after a man was found dead near an apartment building.
The man's body was found about 1:15 a.m. on the sidewalk by someone visiting the complex, police said. The victim had obvious facial injuries, but the cause of death had not been determined this morning.
The victim is believed to be a 24-year-old Las Vegas resident, but it is not known what he was doing at the complex, police said. No witnesses have come forward.
None of the names of the slain people were released this morning pending positive identification and notification of their families.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about any of these homicides to call 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
