Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 | 10:51 a.m.

The names of the three Metro Police officers ambushed Sunday when they entered an apartment were released this morning as Sgt. Matthew McCarthy and Officers Mike McNamee and Carmen Donegan.

McCarthy, 29, and McNamee, 28, were shot during the shootout. McCarthy, who was shot in the shoulder, was released from University Medical Center Monday, and McNamee, who was shot in the face and shoulder, was released Tuesday.

McCarthy has been with the department for seven years, Donegan for a year and McNamee for 10 months, police said.

The officers were called to the Hampton Court Apartments on Swenson Street near Flamingo Road Sunday about 8:30 p.m. on the report of a shot being fired inside one of the units.

McNamee and Donegan, 34, returned fire as they backed out of the apartment. The officers fired 29 times and were fired upon by 29 shots from an assault rifle and four blasts from a shotgun, police said.

Security guard Martin Lorenzo, who was standing nearby, was shot in the leg. He was listed in good condition this morning.

Jose Vallejo, 44, surrendered soon after the shootout and was booked into the Clark County jail on several counts of attempted murder. Francisco Benitez, 37, was found dead in the apartment.
