LAKE MEAD: Anglers who were fishing for striped bass following the Nevada Division of Wildlife's weekly rainbow trout plants discovered last week that the fish weren't coming near shore to feed. In addition, the trout that were planted quickly headed for open water and only a few were caught.
About the only success for stripers that has been reported to NDOW during the past week has been at Las Vegas Bay, Government Wash and the Virgin Bowl. The fish at Las Vegas Bay and Government Wash are being caught with Sassy Shad and Rattle Trap lures as well as live shad that anglers are netting in Las Vegas Bay.
Anglers are anticipating that the action for stripers should soon get under way at the Meat Hole in the Overton Arm. Traditionally large numbers of stripers move into that area in February.
Largemouth bass have been caught recently in coves in the Government Wash and Las Vegas Bay areas. Interestingly, some of the fish have been taken with live shad.
LAKE MOHAVE: Boaters who were fishing for large striped bass in the Cottonwood Cove area had some success late last week with a 41-pound and a pair of 25-pound fish being caught. All of the fish were caught with large plugs in front of Cottonwood.
Other than the three large fish, there has been little success for stripers in Cottonwood and Davis basins. The action for stripers has been slow as well near Willow Beach.
WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Over the weekend an angler fell through the ice at Cold Springs Reservoir. Fishing should be avoided until ice conditions improve.
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Very few anglers were at the lake during the weekend because of cold weather and storms. Ice is about eight inches thick and the trout fishing has been below par. Even temperatures have been dropping to below zero while the thermometer has been hitting the low 30s during the days.
ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Ice fishing for rainbow trout continues to be fair on the upper end of the lake. Caution should be used when walking on the ice because of possible thinning around the edge of the lake.
