Editorial: It’s time for Bush to back Lake Tahoe
Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 | 9:42 a.m.
It would be encouraging if President Bush, in his budget package to Congress next week, backs a bipartisan request to include at least $30 million next year to help restore Lake Tahoe. This week Nevada's U.S. senators, Democrat Harry Reid and Republican John Ensign, reminded Bush that last year he talked about the federal government's responsibility to preserve the magnificent lake. Bush, in his only visit to Nevada, last summer criticized the Clinton administration for not honoring its financial commitment to improve Lake Tahoe's clarity.
Local and state governments have contributed to Lake Tahoe's restoration. Now that Bush is in the White House, he should make sure the federal government kicks in its fair share, too.
