Program to study bats, winter ecology

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area's schedule of free hikes and walks this week includes:

Rock-hound Delight: 2-mile hike Friday for adults to explore a section of Oak Creek or First Creek. Meet at the fee station.

Winter Wonders Walk: 2-mile moderate hike in the late morning Saturday for ages 15 to adults to explore Pine Creek Canyon's winter ecology.

Rockin at Red Rock: 1-mile moderate hike Saturday for ages 10 to adults see a climbing demonstration by rangers. Participants will not climb.

Hike "The Hurl": This 7-mile moderately strenuous hike Saturday for 12- year-olds to adults on wild horses and burro trails that have recently become mountain biking trails behind the old mining village of Blue Diamond.

The World of Bats: 25-minute program Sunday to learn about the mythology, biology and benefits of bats. Begins 11 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. No sign-up necessary.

'Valentine Food Tasting' planned

The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary is hosting "Have A Heart Drive and Valentine Food Tasting" 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Salvation Army's Fellowship Hall, 2900 Palomino Lane.

Gloria Ensberg and Jane LeMasters, members of the Desert Quilters of Nevada, will present examples of their craft.

All donations will benefit Salvation Army programs. For more information, call 870-4430, Ext. 4.

Storyteller Makeba to appear

The Black Mountain Recreation Center is hosting a performance by award-winning musician and storyteller Awele Makeba 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the center, 599 Greenway Road, Henderson.

Advanced tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for youth 17 and under and seniors 55 or more. Tickets are $8 and $5 at the door. Family passes are also available. For more information, call 565-2367.

Talks on cancer, arthritis on tap

University Medical Center's Silver Advantage is offering lectures on skin cancer and rheumatoid arthritis.

The skin cancer update, presented by Dr. Greg Wastek, a dermatologist, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Seville Terrace, 2000 N. Rampart Blvd. in Summerlin.

The talk about rheumatoid arthritis presented by Dr. Michael Clifford, a rheumatologist, will be 2 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Desert Vista Community Center, 10360 Sun City Blvd. in Sun City Summerlin. To register, call 229-4705.

High school students,

their parents and teachers interested in physics and astronomy are invited to attend an open house at UNLV 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Bigelow Physics Building. Please RSVP to the physics department at 895-3563. A pizza lunch will be included.
