Candidates file for seats in Las Vegas, NLV

Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 | 11 a.m.

Local attorney Bill Henderson, who fell short in a bid for Family Court last year, is running for a spot on the Las Vegas Municipal Court bench.

Henderson, 41, filed for the Department 2 seat currently held by Betsy Kolkoski. Kolkoski, who was appointed last year, is seeking to retain her seat.

In addition to Kolkoski, Municipal Judges Cedric Kerns, Michelle Fitzpatrick Leavitt and Jessie Walsh are also seeking to be retained.

In the race for four City Council seats, James Asche, Rudolph "Rudy" Durso and Doug Opolka, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1999 and County Commission in 2000, are challenging Michael Mack in Ward 6.

In North Las Vegas, Councilman John Rhodes, who faces felony charges related to insurance fraud, filed for re-election in Ward 1, as promised. So far he has only one challenger, Robert Eliason.

Councilwoman Stephanie Smith also filed to keep her place on the council Tuesday. She is being challenged by Anita Wood and Mark Kincaid, son of County Commissioner Mary Kincaid, whom Smith challenged last fall.

John 3:16 Cook, a homeless advocate, on Monday filed a challenge against Mayor Michael Montandon. Mark Crabtree Sr. also is running for the office.

Three candidates have filed against Municipal Judge Warren Van Landschoot: Richard Melson, Lewis Gazda and Aaron Tippetts.
