Local developer Champion Homes hit with disciplinary complaint

Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 | 11:20 a.m.

Las Vegas developer Champion Homes has been charged by the Nevada State Contractors Board with several violations of Nevada construction law.

The board accused Champion Homes of substandard workmanship and failing to comply with a notice to correct, pay monies due, cooperate with a board investigation, establish financial responsibility and to maintain a bond.

Margi Grein, the board's executive officer, said the Contractors Board heard testimony from Champion executive Terry Manley this week and will again consider the matter next month.

Manley could not be reached for comment on the charges.

Champion Homes' license was suspended Aug. 7 after it allegedly failed to maintain a bond, while its affiliate, Manley Development Inc., had its license suspended Sept. 1 after it allegedly failed to renew its license.

Both licenses will remain suspended pending the outcome of the disciplinary hearing.

"The two companies can't get new permits for starting new work, but they can finish work-in-progress," Grein said.

Separately, Champion Homes and Manley are involved in lawsuits filed by investors against insolvent Interstate Mortgage Group Inc. and its president, David Ferradino, who were accused of self-dealing and illegal business practices that allegedly put the plaintiffs' investments at risk.

Interstate Mortgage was seized Nov. 2 by the state Financial Institutions Division, which cited a loss of collateral securing $5.7 million in loans because IMG released seven liens to Champion Homes without having been repaid for the loans.
