Savvy wine buy: ‘98 Old Vines Zinfandel
Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 | 8:56 a.m.
Zinfandel is a varietal found only in California, although new technology has enabled scientists to trace the grape's DNA back to Croatia, where a grape very similar to it is grown. This is a dark, rich, alcoholic wine, deeply concentrated and quite intense with the flavors of ripe red fruit. This is one of the best examples of the Zinfandel grape that you will ever taste, but it's not a sipping wine. Rather, it is a wine for strongly flavored food such as wild game or red meat. Drink now, or better yet, put this wine aside for a few years.
Available at Lee's Discount Liquors, $24.99, and Las Vegas Wine Company, $24.99.
