LV trash haulers join Teamsters

Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 | 10:54 a.m.

Employees of Specialty Transportation Services Inc. (STS), a company subcontracted by Republic Services of Southern Nevada, have voted to be represented by Teamsters Local 631.

Republic, formerly known as Silver State Disposal Service, is the franchised trash hauler for Southern Nevada. STS hauls trash from Republic pickup sites in the city to a landfill near Apex.

Representation was approved 73-5 in a Jan. 5 vote, the Teamsters said.

Ray Isner, director of organizing for Teamsters Local 631, said contract negotiations would begin soon with Portage, Ind.-based STS. Isner said the union hopes to leverage its strength as representative of 1,200 Republic workers in the negotiations with STS.

A union contract approved by Republic last year prohibits any more subcontracting of jobs, a point of contention that nearly led to a trash-hauler strike last summer.
