Letter: Groups sanction discrimination

Kudos to the local chapter of the National Conference for Community and Justice. Its stance on the issue of gays in the Boy Scouts as a human and civil rights issue is laudable and sensible.
United Way of Southern Nevada's failure to withdraw funding to the scouts, and send a clear message that it opposes discrimination of any kind, is truly disturbing. Is it "united" in sanctioning discrimination?
God created a diversity of sexualities among us and it is entirely possible to be morally "straight" and sexually different in one's private life. Yet the Mormon Church leads the way in its spiritual violence against sexual minorities.
It blatantly fans the fires of homophobia and discrimination in our community, as evidenced by its strong support of the sadly misguided and unnecessary Proposition 2.
Any religious organization that attempts to amend the constitution of the state because it irrationally fears gays and lesbians has no place in the National Conference for Community and Justice.
