Regulator urges Park Place exec be banned from industry

ATLANTIC CITY -- New Jersey's top casino regulator recommended Monday that a gambling-addicted former casino president be banned from the business.

Citing a litany of lies, financial irregularities and broken promises, state Casino Control Commission Chairman James Hurley said former Caesars Atlantic City Hotel Casino President Gary DiBartolomeo could not be trusted to work in a casino in any job.

Park Place Entertainment Corp. of Las Vegas owns Caesars.

Hurley said DiBartolomeo cannot hide behind his status as a compulsive gambler to evade responsibility for lying to his bosses, casino regulators and others about his betting.

"Blame and guilt are not considerations; but accountability most certainly is," Hurley wrote in a 42-page decision. "The illness, no matter how grave, cannot excuse dishonesty. And that is what this case is all about: Respondent's dishonesty."

The decision still must be ratified by the five-member Casino Control Commission.
