Building division getting a new, well, building

Monday, Jan. 22, 2001 | 10:19 a.m.

Having outgrown its digs in the Clark County Government Center, a portion of the building division will soon move into a new $11 million facility in the southwest valley.

Building director Bob Weber said the 50,000-square-foot building at the corner of Russell and Cameron roads will house plan review and permitting staff as well as the department's entire inspection team.

About 170 of the building division's 250 employees will move into the new facility in May.

The satellite office will not only free up space at the government center and provide room for inspectors -- who have worked out of the airport's engineering building since 1994 -- it also will be more convenient for developers.

"It gives our customers easier access; parking is a substantial challenge at this facility," Weber said. "This will offer an option for developers in the southwest."

Weber said the site was chosen because of the swift growth in the northwest. The building is near Decatur Boulevard, giving inspectors quick access to major thoroughfares. It also was have enough space to provide meeting rooms.

"There is not adequate space in the current airport engineering office, and we've outgrown the space available at the County Government Center," Weber said.

Weber said the new building is the first satellite office in the valley; the division also has offices in Overton and Mesquite. If the county and government staff continues to grow, the new facility will be expanded.

"We have the property and the infrastructure for expansion if the community continues to grow at a similar rate that has been taking place," Weber said.
