Story: The world's first test-tube baby-- a 5-pound, 12-ounce girl -- was born Tuesday in "excellent" health to Mrs. Lesley Brown, marking a milestone in the science of human development.
Aug. 27: Pope John Paul I Begins New Reign
Story: The College of Cardinals, meeting in the shortest conclave in modern history, Saturday elected Cardinal Albino Luciani, 65, the son of a bricklayer, a conservative and a surprise choice, as the 263rd pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He took the name John Paul I.
Sept. 30: Pope John Paul I's Smiling Face in Life Becomes 'Serene' in Death
Story: The body of Pope John Paul I, his face serene in a death no one expected, lay in state in his papal palace Friday as the Roman Catholic Church set in motion for the second time in as many months the 2,000-year-old process of choosing a successor.
Nov. 9: Golda Meir Dies at 80
Story: Golda Meir, the Russian-born, American-educated grandmother who led Israel through its darkest wartime hours, died Friday at the age of 80.
Oct. 30: LV Boy Kidnapped
Story: FBI Agent Bill Jansen told reporters Sunday they have no suspects in the kidnapping of Cary Sayegh, snatched from his Albert Einstein School playground at Temple Beth Shalom Oct. 25 between noon and 12:30 p.m.
Nov. 25: Temple Deaths Double
Story: Nearly twice the number of People's Temple adherents died in the jungle commune as had initially been reported by Guyanese authorities, United States officials said Friday.
