Spending
Here is how the Las Vegas City Council voted Wednesday to spend taxpayer money:
For an interlocal contract to pave unpaved roads in areas throughout the city and county that do not meet federal air standards for dust.
To Las Vegas Paving Corp. for the replacement of sidewalks, islands, ramps and signs on Washington Avenue from Martin Luther King Boulevard to Interstate 15.
For construction of the Las Vegas Wash Rancho System.
To construct the Las Vegas Wash Smoke Ranch System.
To VTN Nevada for construction management of the US 95/Rancho Sewer.
To The Louis Berger Group, Inc. for design of the Ann Road detention basin.
Mack takes seats on regional panels
Las Vegas City Councilman Michael Mack was unanimously appointed Wednesday to replace Mayor Oscar Goodman on two regional committees.
Mack was appointed to Goodman's old seats on the Regional Transportation Commission and the Regional Flood Control District. Goodman stepped down from those boards to concentrate more of his efforts on heading the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition.
Councilman Larry Brown was re-appointed to the Oversight Panel for School Facilities.
Website explains how to do it
Voters and residents interested in running for election in Las Vegas can get information by clicking on the waving flag in the city's website (ci.las-vegas.nv.us). The site contains general information, voter information, candidate information and election and reporting information.
The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday also declared the 2001 elections will be held for council seats in wards 2, 4, 5 and 6 and for Municipal Court judge in departments 2, 3, 5 and 6.
The primary election is April 3 and the general election is June 5. Filing for all seats opens Jan. 23.
Contract approved with Portland firm
Ball Janik LLP was hired Wednesday as the city of Las Vegas' federal lobbyist.
The Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved a $145,200 contract for the Portland-based firm to handle all federal lobbying in 2001. The contract has two one-year extension options.
Last year the city paid $171,600 to two firms to handle lobbying in Washington.
Golf course, sewer planned
The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday declared its intent to issue bonds to pay for a new municipal golf course and for sewer and flood control improvements.
A $12 million limited tax golf course bond will be pledged to the project at Cheyenne Avenue and Durango Drive.
Sewer and flood control bonds totaling $55 million will be used for a flood control project in Ward 5.
More northwest land joins city
Another 620 acres of Clark County land is now within the city of Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved the annexation of land west of El Capitan Way and east of Grand Canyon Drive. Two weeks ago, the council approved a similar annexation of 645 acres near the northwest Town Center.
Mayor Oscar Goodman abstained from Wednesday's vote because one of the parties involved in the annexation has a business relationship with him.
Olympic Garden withdraws request
The owner of the Olympic Garden topless club withdrew his request for a parking lot project Wednesday.
Pete Eliades had sought permission to rezone property behind his club to build a parking lot. City staff, residents and the Planning Commission were all opposed to the proposal due to the impact a parking lot would have on neighboring residential areas.
The proposal was withdrawn Wednesday without prejudice.
Shopping center ready to open
The first major commercial center in the northwest Town Center will open next week.
The Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved packaged liquor licenses and sales permits for both a Wal-Mart Supercenter and a Sam's Club planned on West Tropical Parkway.
The Wal-Mart is scheduled to open Jan. 22 and Sam's Club is scheduled to open Jan. 23.
