Letter: Tortured animals not fashionable

Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 | 9:59 a.m.

First I would like to respond to the ignorant comment made by Mabel Murray, who said, "The only woman who doesn't like fur is one who's never had one." I represent many when I say how ridiculous that comment is.

The thought of fur coats repulses me, therefore I will never have one. Anyone who wears fur shows how cruel and heartless they are. It is true that fur is beautiful, but only on the animal it belongs on. We have no right to steal the coat off their back. There are many other alternatives to keep us warm and fashionable.

Second, Fur Commission USA stated that PETA's stance is that of relying on organic materials. That is not true. PETA's stance is one of abstaining from harming animals for any reason and making alternative choices that don't involve violence.

I could go on pointing out all the selfish and cruel aspects of the fur business, but instead I thought I would offer a famous quote by Gandhi that sums it all up:

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
