Poster contest for children scheduled

Officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area are seeking entries for the first water safety poster contest.

Park officials hope that the contest will educate visitors to the lake on the necessity of water safety.

Children in fourth through 12th grades are invited to enter the contest. Posters must be hand-drawn on an 11-by-17 piece of paper or poster board and must be original artwork. The contest will be judged in three categories, grades 4-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12.

Posters must also have one of three slogans about water safety in order to be considered by the committee of judges from the local boating and water safety community.

Entry forms are available at participating schools or online (www.nps.gov/ lame/postercontest.html).

For more information call Nancy Bernard, Lake Mead's water and boating safety coordinator, at 293-8714.

License granted for teen dance

Teens will have something fun and legal to do on Saturday nights, provided a three-month trial period goes off without a snag.

The Lenz Group, which operates the Huntridge Theatre and the Sanctuary club, won approval Wednesday for a teenage dance license at the 1208 E. Charleston Boulevard site.

The council approved the license with the provisions that Richard and Tamara Lenz prohibit alcohol sales at the Huntridge Tavern during teen events and post additional security outside the facility after dances.

The board will review the license in three months to make sure no problems have arisen. Any problems could impact the Lenz's liquor license at the Huntridge.

Richard Lenz said in his nine years of operating the Huntridge, he has never had any problems with underage drinking during all-ages shows.
