Clinton taking parting shot on airline competitiveness

WASHINGTON -- The Clinton administration plans a last-minute call for closer policing of airlines in light of recent deals that would consolidate the industry among a few large carriers.

Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater intends to release three studies showing how the government could improve competition in the air travel industry, The New York Times reported today.

The three studies contend big airlines use frequent-flier bonuses, payments to travel agencies and exclusive corporate contracts to suppress competition.

The studies also argue that giant airlines exploit their dominance of major metropolitan airports to charge high fares. The airlines say such premiums have been overstated.
