Letter: Baseless attacks on Ashcroft
Monday, Jan. 15, 2001 | 9:28 a.m.
No sooner did George W. Bush name Sen. John Ashcroft as his nominee for attorney general than people such as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Patricia Ireland started a smear campaign attacking Ashcroft, a man of experience and integrity.
Ashcroft has demonstrated leadership through chairing the National Association of Attorneys General, the National Governors' Association and the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution. His experience as a lawyer and public servant has prepared him for cleaning up the Justice Department and restoring America's confidence in the rule of law.
Even though Ashcroft would be the first attorney general in U.S. history who has served as a state attorney general, governor and U.S. senator, the left continues to make baseless attacks and question whether he will uphold the law! However, they have no example with which to demonstrate his failure to enforce the law.
Being conservative is the left's main reason for attacking Ashcroft. He is known as a man of impeccable character and has a strong record on crime.
Ashcroft would be such an asset as our country's attorney general. Hopefully the U.S. senators will support him for this position.
