Letter: Superiority out of WAC
Friday, Jan. 12, 2001 | 10:24 a.m.
I couldn't disagree with Ron Kantowski more about the eight defectors -- the OuttaWACers -- sneaking away from the Western Athletic Conference ("Split from WAC was great move," Jan. 4).
The Mountain Worst Conference (MWC) had a pathetic (nonconference) record of 5-19 in football this past year. Just because this bus league of backwater schools went 3-0 in bowl games hardly qualifies them as superior.
Poor old San Jose State has beaten Stanford three years straight. How many Pac-10 teams did the mighty MWC beat even once?
And speaking of dialing up Carol Harter, apparently the NCAA has no problem accessing her number since the UNLV Renegades are on probation again. And just what was that Tulsa-UNLV score last year in the NCAA Tournament?
The WAC 16 gave the old WAC a presence in Texas and Oklahoma and access to large TV markets there. But the Gang of Five had tunnel vision and didn't give it a chance to work.
