Letter: Holiday concert one to remember
Friday, Jan. 12, 2001 | 9:48 a.m.
I had a heartening experience recently regarding the Christmas spirit. I had found it almost excruciating listening to nothing but secular holiday songs on the radio for a whole month, with not even a sprinkling of traditional carols.
Any vestige of religion was rooted out, and with it, any hint of good quality music, and worst, the childhood memories it could have evoked. Nostalgia wasn't given a chance to renew our lives and help make the season magical.
The Las Vegas Philharmonic Christmas concert was a sparkling exception, with real carols, fun to play, and fun to listen to. The soloist, Luana DeVol, was exquisite, her voice one long, finely spun line from beginning to end.
The Durango High School Choir came through for her, and if you missed it you should make sure you catch it next year.
