Editorial: Don’t make same Massimino errors

There is quite a buzz in the city over the possibility of UNLV landing Rick Pitino to coach its men's basketball team. Pitino recently resigned as coach of the NBA's Boston Celtics, but he still is considered a formidable presence in college basketball. Pitino compiled a 219-50 record as coach of the University of Kentucky men's basketball team, winning the national championship in 1996.
But before everyone gets caught up in Pitino fever -- it's become apparent the job is his if he wants it -- everyone should take a deep breath. As University Regent Mark Alden has correctly noted, the university shouldn't promise him money it doesn't have. Don't forget that it was revealed in 1994 that a secret supplemental contract was given to then-coach Rollie Massimino, whose extra income was supposed to be paid for by booster contributions. But in an embarrassing episode, UNLV itself had to fork over $1.9 million in order to buy out Massimino's contract when he was fired. Whoever is offered the job, there should be assurances that there will be no surprises in any contract that could cost the university dearly down the road.
