Maria Cogburn, mother of victim Crystal Lee Ledesma, testified Tuesday that the March 1999 shooting was particularly devastating for her grandson, Keoni, who was 5 years old when he watched his mother die in a McDonald's restaurant parking lot.
The prosecution and the defense already had agreed that Miguel Cano, 19, would be sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility beginning in 10 years for the murder charge.
On the attempted murder charge, the judge added four years to the amount of time Cano must serve until he is eligible for parole.
Prosecutors said Cano was among those observing a fight outside a McDonald's in North Las Vegas. When the loser of the fight fled inside the restaurant, Cano pursued, stepped inside the doorway and fired at the man's back.
One of three shots fired traveled through the restaurant, exited through the drive-through window and entered a pickup in which Keoni, Ledesma and her friend were sitting. The boy and the friend weren't injured.
