Female Athlete of the Week: MATT BILYEU
School: Cheyenne
Class: Junior
Sport: Wrestling
Last week: Bilyeu, the Desert Shields' heavyweight wrestler, pinned all four of his opponents to capture the 275-pound title at Centennial's Bulldog Grappler Tournament last weekend. Despite weighing in at 246 pounds -- 20-30 pounds lighter than several of his foes -- Bilyeu made short work of two California opponents, pinned Clark's Major Vina and took care of Centennial's Vito Pasqualiccio in the championship round, earning the event's Most Valuable Wrestler award for the heavier weight classes. "He's pretty aggressive and a lot of heavyweights aren't used to that," Cheyenne coach Mike Abrams said. "He's like a little buzzsaw -- he keeps coming at them. He's been getting better each week, and it's all because of his work ethic."
Male Athlete of the Week: DANIELLE DAVIS
School: Centennial
Class: Freshman
Sport: Soccer
Last week: Davis tallied five goals to help the Bulldogs to a pair of division victories over Mojave and Cimarron-Memorial. After scoring three times in a 8-0 win over the Rattlers on Tuesday, the freshman striker found the net twice in a shockingly-easy 6-0 triumph over the Spartans, defending 4A Clark County champs. "I could tell she was a good player right away, but she's small so I was worried about how she would do against the older kids," Centennial coach Jay Howard said. "But she's getting more comfortable with playing in high school and with playing with her teammates. She's fast, she has a really good shot and she's relentless. She never stops."
