Las Vegas area fishing report

Updated Jan. 10, 2001

LAKE MEAD: Largemouth bass are being caught in the Overton Arm while the striped bass and rainbow trout fishing continues to be fair in the Boulder Basin, according to the Nevada Division of Wildlife.

The Muddy and Virgin rivers have been producing limits of six bass for boaters who have been casting artificial worms and jigs.

Stripers are being caught near the shoreline at Government Wash, Hemenway Harbor and Las Vegas Bay. Most anglers are using anchovies to catch the fish.

LAKE MOHAVE: A 36-pound striped bass was weighed by NDOW creel clerks Sunday at Cottonwood Cove. The fish was caught by a boater who was trolling with a lure in the Cottonwood area.

Largemouth bass are also being caught around Cottonwood Cove. The fish are being found at the 45-foot level and are being taken by boaters who are fishing on the lake's bottom with rubber worms.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is scheduled to stock rainbow trout Friday at Willow Beach.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: There is open water at the boat dock and fishing has been slow for rainbow trout for the few anglers who have tried their luck.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: The lake is covered with ice and fishing has been fair for rainbow trout on its upper end. The ice in that part of the lake is about seven inches thick.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: All lakes on the area are covered with ice. The Division of Wildlife is cautioning anglers to be extremely cautious because the ice is only 1-2 inches thick.

COMINS LAKE: Some open water is found on the north end of the lake, but there is still ample ice for ice fishing. NDOW biologists checked several rainbow trout recently that weighed seven to eight pounds. Small jigs tipped with nightcrawlers and woolly bugger flies have been catching the fish.
