Conference planned on applications

State Engineer Hugh Ricci has scheduled a prehearing conference on ground water claims made by federal and state states agencies and Paiutes in Moapa Valley.

Of the 19 claims on the ground water 45 miles northeast of Las Vegas, 13 applications have been filed in the past year by the Moapa Paiutes for a potential natural-gas fired power plant.

The first application was filed by the Las Vegas Valley Water District in October 1989 to serve growth in Southern Nevada.

The hearing is scheduled 10 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Las Vegas City Council Chambers, 400 Stewart Ave.

State of the City scheduled Thursday

North Las Vegas will hold its fifth annual State of the City Address 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Texas Station.

The keynote speaker will be Richard "Rick" Smith, president of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. Smith will deliver a presentation on the high-tech industry with a future outlook on North Las Vegas.

North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce President Jim Wolf will give a brief business perspective.

The luncheon is $25 per person and seating is limited. People are asked to RSVP by calling JoAnn Lawrence at 633-1034.

Henderson center will host workshop

The Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road, Henderson, is offering a photography workshop 5-7 p.m. Monday.

Enrollment is $20 per person (ages 15 or more). Participants must bring their own cameras to class.

The center also will offer an American Heartsaver CPR workshop 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Jewish center show scheduled

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada is holding auditions for the spring Jewish Community Talent Show, "Viva Oy Vegas."

The JCC is looking for a variety of dancing, singing, comedic performance and other talent acts, showcasing Jewish content and culture.

Auditions are being scheduled for 3909 S. Maryland Parkway, fourth floor.

Orientation on tap for students

UNLV's Greenspun College of Urban Affairs is holding orientation sessions for new and potential transfer students Thursday and Friday.

The college's six departments and schools will hold orientation sessions at the Classroom Building Complex on these times and dates:

Thursday 10:15-10:45 a.m. in the Hank Greenspun School of Communications, Room A-106; 2:15-2:45 p.m. in the Human Services Counseling, Room A-112; 3-3:30 p.m. in Social Work, Room A-106.

Friday 11-11:30 a.m in Environmental Studies, Room A-110; and 2:15-2:45 p.m. in Public and Health Care Administration, Room A-112.
