Letter: Homeless not fault of Clinton
Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 | 9:57 a.m.
In regards to Amelia Palmer's Jan. 2 letter about how Bill Clinton/Al Gore didn't help the poor or homeless:
l. There will always be poor no matter who is in office, but in general the economy was much better for all Americans, more people obtained jobs and more people were able to buy houses than ever before.
2. I came here from another state, not because of the economy but because of the weather.
3. All the homeless people started during the Reagan administration when he decided to put the mentally ill out of the institutions and into the streets. So many of the homeless just can't cope mentally and need more than a temporary shelter, and with gambling and the "hope of winning just once," it probably is even worse here in Nevada.
4. If George W. Bush gives us the same that his father did, then watch out. Too many people have short memories. Remember the saying, "Read my lips, no new taxes." But someone couldn't fulfill that promise.
