Letter: City is slow to help homeless
Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 | 9:24 a.m.
One of the worst problems facing Las Vegas is the homeless. I used to work at a casino in downtown Las Vegas and saw this problem every day. These people are human and need help; the city of Las Vegas gives them very little help.
I lived in the Long Beach, Calif., area for 29 years and the area of Los Angeles for 31 years. Both cities give more help to the homeless than Las Vegas. Los Angeles and Long Beach have places for them to sleep and eat. They also have some programs for them to get back to the working field.
I know that Las Vegas has some, but not enough. I have lived in Las Vegas for four years, and I have seen very little improvement for the homeless. I hear there are more than 3,000 or more homeless living in Las Vegas. Maybe Mayor Oscar Goodman and his council members should take a walk around Las Vegas and see what is happening.
