Sears closing four Las Vegas hardware stores
Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 | 11:30 a.m.
Sears, Roebuck and Co. said today it will close all four of its hardware stores in the Las Vegas Valley by the end of January.
The Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based department store announced plans to close 89 stores nationwide amid a tightening outlook for retailers that caused its sales to fall slightly last month.
Stores targeted for closing were mostly among Sears' 2,100 specialty retail locations, and include 53 National Tire and Battery stores and 30 Sears Hardware stores and four full-line stores.
Peggy Palter, Sears' spokeswoman, said the four affected Las Vegas area stores, most of which were 20,000 square-feet locations, were "underperforming" the company's sales expectations. The two full-line Sears department stores in Las Vegas are unaffected.
