Training course being offered

A crisis intervention training program is being offered 6-10 p.m. on Monday and on Jan. 15, 22 and 29 at SAFE House, 18 Sunrise Drive, Suite G-70, Henderson.

Participants will learn about the dynamics of domestic violence, effects of violence on victims and their families, crisis intervention and mediation, and the law on domestic violence. They also will learn how to develop safety plans with domestic violence victims and their families. Training will include lectures, experiential exercises and group discussions.

The cost is $75 or a 16-hour volunteer commitment. For more information, call Jennifer Askew, SAFE House prevention coordinator at 451-4203.

Free hikes, walks offered

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks with reservations. Call 363-1922. Some coming programs:

Rocks and Hard Places -- 2-mile moderate hike Friday to catch the sun and enjoy the scenery. Ages 8 to adult welcome.

Mountain Lions of La Madre -- 3-mile moderate hike Saturday to seek evidence of the mountain lions that roam Red Rock. Learn of their natural history and behavior on this hike into the White Rock "saddle" area. Dress warmly and bring binoculars.

Desert Designs: Rock Art -- Hands-on crafts project Saturday. Draw or stamp "pictograph" or peck your own "petroglyphs" into clay rocks using designs found at Red Rock or your owns ideas. Learn what rock art tells us about early American Indian life. This program will be conducted in the Visitor Center.

Predator Program -- Ranger Gina will present a series of 15-minute talks with a slide show Saturday afternoon on observing predators in the wild.

Moenkopi Rambling -- 2-mile moderate walk Sunday on the Moenkopi trail to explore questions about the rock's origin and how past cultures used the plants that are found along the trail. Dress for the weather.

The World of Bats -- Illustrated talk by Ranger Brian Sunday about the mythology, biology and benefits of bats.

Amateur radio test set

An FCC-approved amateur radio exam will be offered noon Saturday at the Community College of Southern Nevada, 700 College Drive, Henderson. For more information and pre-registration, call Tim Hunt at 872-5268.

Free workshop to be held

A free workshop "Love Yourself, Heal Your Life," is being offered 7-8 p.m. Friday at Stress Management Center of Nevada, 601 Whitney Ranch, Suite C-12, Henderson.

Elizabeth Reaves, a certified Louise L. Hay teacher, will present a one-hour free introductory seminar to acquaint people with Louise L. Hay's philosophy. Reserve a spot by calling 458-8088.

Tournament for children set

A checkers tournament for children (ages 6-12) will be hosted from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive, Henderson. Participation is free and each child will be awarded a certificate for taking part. For more information, call 450-5885.

Ten free trees for new members

Ten free live oak trees will be given to each person who joins the National Arbor Day Foundation this month.

The free trees are part of the nonprofit foundation's Trees for America campaign.

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between Feb. 1 and May 31 with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free.

Send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Live Oak Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by Jan. 31.
