Driver dies in two-car crash

Metro Police say the failure of a driver to stop at a red light near downtown on Saturday night resulted in a fatal two-car accident.

Raymundo Aguilar, 20, of North Las Vegas was headed west on Bonanza Road in a Ford pickup and went through a red signal at the intersection of Bruce Street about 8:15 p.m., police said.

The pickup then began to swerve and entered the eastbound travel lanes of Bonanza, colliding with a Honda Civic. After the impact the pickup rolled onto its side and slid about 200 feet. Aguilar died at the scene.

The driver and two passengers in the Civic were taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Speed on the part of the pickup driver appears to have contributed to the accident, police said.

Pedestrian killed in Strip accident

Metro Police are looking for a driver in connection with an early Sunday morning hit-and-run accident that killed a pedestrian and sent another to the hospital.

The accident occurred about 2:20 a.m. as Kandyl Riley, 22, and Victor Higgins Jr., 31, attempted to cross from the north side of Tropicana Avenue to the south side near the San Remo hotel-casino.

The pedestrians were hit by a white sport utility vehicle, possibly a Mitsubishi Montero, headed eastbound toward Koval Lane. The cause of the accident appears to be jaywalking by the pedestrians, but the SUV failed to stop at the accident scene, police said.

Anyone with information about the accident or the identification of the SUV is asked to call detective Doug Nutton at 229-3535 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Cab crash kills Arizona woman

An Arizona woman was killed Sunday night when the taxi she was riding in was struck by a car and overturned on Paradise Road.

The accident occurred about 8:15 p.m. near Sierra Vista Road, when the cab turned from southbound Paradise into an apartment complex and was hit by another car, Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Alan Davidson said.

Melody McMillan, 47, of Tucson, was thrown from the taxi and died at the scene. The driver of the taxi has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and failure to yield.

Mount Charleston items on agenda

Clark County Commissioners will consider a zoning request Wednesday to put a convenience store, gas station and car wash on the road leading to Mount Charleston.

Developer Kyle and Frontage has requested a zone change from rural-open land to general commercial to allow the development.

The Clark County planning staff and the Lower Kyle Canyon Citizens Advisory Council oppose the project, arguing that the proposed development is too intense and too far away from other existing commercial properties. The Clark County Planning Commission, however, gave a qualified green light to the project, except for the car wash.

The development would be about 1,000 feet west of U.S. 95 on Lower Kyle Canyon Road.

Bomb threat closes Interstate 15

Traffic was shut down in both directions of Interstate 15 Saturday after a bogus bomb threat on a Greyhound bus was called in to emergency dispatchers.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers stopped the bus bound for Los Angeles from Las Vegas at 11:20 a.m. near State Route 146. The bus was evacuated and the Las Vegas Fire Department's bomb squad was called to the scene to search the bus, highway patrol spokesman Trooper Alan Davidson said.

No explosives were found, and after about 90 minutes the interstate was reopened to traffic.
