Letter: Lobbyists serve no good purpose
Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 | 9:12 a.m.
But my basic question is: Why do we need a redundant paid lobbyist?
What are the job descriptions of Harry Reid, John Ensign, Shelley Berkley and Jim Gibbons? Didn't we elect them to lobby for us (and Las Vegas)? Isn't Reid the second in-command of the Senate Democrats, with lots of horsepower, and isn't Ensign a member of Bush's faithful?
Why does Las Vegas have to lay out a million or so of taxpayer dollars over the years for what our elected officials should routinely accomplish with our empowerment and glory?
Paid lobbyists are manifestations of the corruption of democracy and waste of taxpayer dollars. You cannot hire someone to exercise and lose weight for you; you have to do it yourself.
