Letter: Give new regime chance to help poor people
Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 | 9:12 a.m.
Six thousand people per month are coming here for work, which means that times must be hard where they lived formerly or they wouldn't come here looking for a better life (which most of them don't find).
Another section of the same Sunday paper tells us how many people are living in shelters and how much money is needed and spent to feed and house poor people, and how it takes everyone in the family working to get by. Sure, there are a lot of people working because they are each making minimum wages and need to work two or three jobs to make a living wage.
I have friends who are still making the same wage that they made 10 years ago, but with the cost of living higher, they barely get by. Now you tell me if you talk to these people, they think your economy is so wonderful. Ask those people on the street along Las Vegas Boulevard North around Owens Avenue what they think of the Clinton/Gore economy.
The Clinton/Gore administration had eight years to do something for the lower-income people and there is no sign of anything having been done. They are still talking about the same things that need to be done as they were talking about in 1992 and 1996. Now the new regime is in there, and let's give them a chance to prove what they can do.
