Reno woman named chairwoman of state Parole Board

Dorla Salling, who has been district administrator for the Division of Parole and Probation in Reno, will start immediately in the $78,000-a-year post.
She replaces Richard Wyett, who cited a lack of support from Gov. Kenny Guinn when resigning earlier this month.
"Dorla Salling's experience and knowledge of the criminal justice system in Nevada make her an excellent choice for this post, and I'm confident she'll be an enormous asset to the Parole Board," Guinn said in announcing the appointment.
The board is charged with deciding whether to release prisoners to community supervision.
Salling has worked in the parole and probation field for 25 years. In her job as district administrator, she supervised more than 100 parole and probation officers and support staff.
She was responsible for recommendations to district courts and parole boards on the incarceration, parole and probation of offenders.
"I'm very excited about this new opportunity and I appreciate Gov. Guinn's confidence in my abilities," Salling said. "The role of parole board chair carries great responsibility.
"I will work hard to make the best decisions possible while keeping the rights of victims and the safety of the public as my first priority."
Salling graduated in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from what was then East Texas State University.
She is a certified peace officer and instructor, and has designed and conducted numerous training academies. She also wrote a manual on sentencing guidelines for the Parole and Probation Division.
