Washoe County sheriff's deputies said Mitchell McGlaughlin, 23, of Auburn, Calif., and Glen Haydon, 24, of Klamath, Calif., were hiking with their dog in the Nightingale Peak area when the accident occurred Friday.
A rescuer had to be lowered into the Jay Bird Mine shaft to retrieve the animal. The dog was reunited with its owners and taken to a Fernley animal care facility for treatment.
The extent of its injuries was not immediately known.
Personnel from Washoe and Churchill counties took part in the rescue. The accident occurred near where Washoe, Churchill and Pershing counties adjoin.
Last month, a dog fractured a hip after falling about 40 feet down an abandoned mine shaft east of Virginia City.
Nevada is riddled with mine shafts dating back as far as 140 years. Many of the shafts aren't sealed or marked.
